What is WebCamTest?

WebCamTest is a free online webcam and camera tester that runs entirely in your browser. It uses the standard WebRTC camera API to show a live preview, report your camera's resolution and frame rate, flip the view between mirror and normal, switch between connected cameras and save PNG snapshots. No video is uploaded, recorded or stored, and no account or software is needed.

How to test your webcam online

  1. Press Start Camera and choose Allow in the browser prompt.
  2. Check the preview for sharpness, brightness, color and smooth motion.
  3. Read the Technical specs for the resolution and frame rate your browser receives.
  4. Switch cameras with the dropdown, or flip the picture with the mirror button.
  5. Press Take Snapshot to save a PNG to your device.

What you can check

Video quality

Compare lighting, focus and color before a meeting, an interview or a stream.

Resolution and FPS

See whether your camera really delivers 720p, 1080p or 4K, and how many frames per second.

Mirror or normal view

Mirror view feels like a mirror. Normal view is how others see you on a call.

Multiple cameras

Switch between the built-in webcam, an external USB camera, or the front and back camera on a phone.

Webcam test FAQ

Why is my webcam not working?

Usually the camera permission is blocked, or another app such as Zoom, Teams, Skype or OBS is already using the camera. Allow camera access for this site, close other apps that use the camera, reconnect the webcam and press Start Camera again. Also check for a privacy shutter or a keyboard camera switch, and make sure your browser is allowed to use the camera in Windows or macOS privacy settings.

How do I fix camera permissions in Chrome and Firefox?

Chrome: click the lock (or tune) icon left of the address bar, open Site settings, set Camera to Allow, then reload the page. Firefox: click the camera icon in the address bar, or the lock icon and then Permissions, clear the Blocked setting for Camera, reload and accept the prompt. On Safari, open Settings for This Website and set Camera to Allow.

Is my video recorded or sent to a server?

No. The video is processed only inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, recorded or stored, and there is no backend. Snapshots are drawn locally and downloaded directly to your device.

How do I check my webcam resolution?

Start the camera and read the Technical specs panel. It shows the width and height in pixels, a quality label such as HD 720p or Full HD 1080p, and the frame rate. Use the requested resolution menu to see whether your camera accepts a higher setting.

Why is the image mirrored?

Mirror view flips the picture horizontally, like a mirror, which feels natural when you look at yourself. Normal view shows the unflipped image, the way people on the other end of a call see you. Use the Mirror View button to switch.

Is WebCamTest free to use?

Yes. WebCamTest is a free online webcam and camera test. It needs no sign-up, download or installation, and works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera.

Does WebCamTest work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. On phones and tablets you can test the front and back cameras, switch between them with the camera dropdown and take snapshots. Allow camera access in the browser when prompted.

Why does the camera need HTTPS?

Browsers only allow camera access on secure pages (HTTPS) or on localhost. If you open this file directly from your disk, some browsers will block the camera. Host it on an HTTPS site, or run a local server.
